Dune II – The Maker now has an official open source license. The source code is released under the MIT License.
What this means
The MIT license is one of the most permissive open source licenses available. In short: you are free to use, modify, and distribute the D2TM source code, as long as you include the original copyright notice. This makes it easy for other developers to learn from, contribute to, or build upon the project.
What about the assets?
The MIT license covers the source code only. The game assets — graphics, sounds, music, and data files — are a different story.
Over the years, the D2TM community has modified, enhanced, and reworked these assets significantly. They are inspired by the original Dune II game but are no longer the original graphics from Westwood Studios or Electronic Arts — they are the creative work of this project’s contributors. As such, they may not be redistributed or reused in other projects without explicit permission from the D2TM project.
The full details are in the LICENSE.md file in the repository.
